BeerHoptacular features a wide variety of breweries that with unique beers from across the Midwest. While not a brewery, Auchentoshan Distillery of Glasgow, Scotland comes to BeerHoptacular bringing the same level of creativity and fun spirit that each brewery hopes to share during the festival. Brand ambassador Robin Nance shares the story behind the two beer cocktails Auchentoshan will feature at BeerHoptacular: a riff on a shandy called “Lemon Tell You Somethin’ Honey” and a nod to the Negroni called “It’s Bitter to be Hoppy.”

“One of the coolest things about working on Auchentoshan is that we are the only tripled-distilled single malt Scotch, it gives us the flexibility to play around. The whole reason we embrace the world of craft beer is because craft beer drinkers have a very evolved palate. They love different flavors and that world plays around with a lot of different things. We thought ‘why not take that and introduce them to a spirit in a way that people haven’t necessarily thought about?’ Master Cicerone Pat Fahey worked on this with us. He came over to my house and for about four hours we just played around with his knowledge of beer and with my knowledge of Auchentoshan and the flavor profiles there and created these amazing cocktails. It was really fun to take his expertise and see what the two of us could create using the two different knowledge bases.”

“You don’t typically think about single-malt Scotch in the sense of cocktails. In addition to that, adding beer into the mix; it takes something beer drinkers are used to and already enjoying and elevates it to the next level and gives them another opportunity to enjoy something new. We don’t take ourselves too seriously. We live in that edgier world where it’s not about drinking it neat or drinking it with a little water or ice, sort of that old, stuffy mentality of single-malt Scotch. We’re a little more urban. It gave us the flexibility to approach someone like Pat and say ‘hey, we have this beer cocktail concept, what do you think?’ It’s been really fun to play with the whole Auchentoshan concept and have someone with Pat’s reputation come on board and really embrace it and come up with some great cocktails.”

“‘It’s Bitter to be Hoppy’ was made to embrace the popularity of IPAs in the craft beer world. We wanted to introduce people to the flavors of Auchentoshan’s single-malt but also embrace the IPA without overshadowing either of the cocktail’s ingredients. It’s made with American oak single-malt Scotch with Aperol, lemon bitters and then we use an IPA. The inspiration for this one was the Negroni cocktail. It also mirrors a Radler style beer, too.”

“We came up with about six different beer cocktails. These two represented easy-drinking, refreshing drinks. ‘Lemon Tell You Somethin’ Honey’ is a bit like adult lemonade. It’s made with Auchentoshan American oak single-malt Scotch with lemon juice and honey syrup topped off with a wit beer.”

Created by: Auchentoshan Ambassador Robin Nance & Master Cicerone Pat Fahey

+ 1.5 parts Auchentoshan American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky
+ .5 parts Honey Syrup (1:1)
+ 1 part Fresh Lemon Juice
+ 3 parts Belgian witbier
